Pass Line Bet
House edge: Low (1.41%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: before the ‘Come Out’ roll (at the start of each round)
Multi-roll: this bet can remain in play for more than one roll
The simplest bet you can make, and arguably the only one that beginners need to concern themselves with. You don’t need to make any other bets at all if you don’t want to.
- If the Shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the Come Out roll, you win your Pass Line bet and another round begins.
- If a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled, you lose your Pass Line bet and another round begins.
- If the Shooter gets a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, your Pass Line bet remains on the felt for the time being.
- The number rolled becomes the Point Number. If the Shooter rolls this number again, before rolling a 7, you win your Pass Line bet.
- If the Shooter rolls a 7 before rolling the Point Number, you lose your Pass Line bet.
Taking The Odds (AKA Pass Line Odds)
House edge: None (0.00%)
Pays: 4 or 10 – 2:1, 5 or 9 – 3:2, 6 or 8 – 6:5
Can be played: after the Point Number has been set, but only if you’ve made a Pass Line bet
Multi-roll
This is a relatively little-known online Craps bet, but has the potential to boost your chances of winning nicely. Essentially you are betting that the Point Number will be rolled before a 7 is.
It’s popular among seasoned Craps online players, because it’s the only bet in the game which has zero house edge. This is because the payouts are equal to the true odds of each point being rolled before a 7. You are however required to have already made a Pass Line bet before the Come Out roll.
To protect themselves from the lack of house edge, online Craps casinos limit the amount you can bet when Taking The Odds. This limit is represented as a multiple of your Pass Line bet amount. As standard, you can expect to be able to bet 3x your Pass Line bet if the Point Number is 4 or 10, 4x if it is 5 or 9, and 5x if it is 6 or 8.
For example: you Take The Odds on a Point Number of 5 being rolled before a 7. Your original Pass Line bet was $15, and the Max Odds you can take is 4x this number, meaning $60. The Odds of a 5 coming before a 7 are 3:2, so you’d win $90 for your $60 bet, while your original Pass Line bet wins even money. This would give you a $105 win, for a $75 total bet.
The table below compares the house edge of each Pass Line bet and shows how Taking The Odds can seriously turn the odds in your favor. To make this bet, you have to stack your chips below the Pass Line – feel free to ask for help if you’re unsure.
Table Odds Taken | Pass Line |
---|---|
0x | 1.41% |
1x | 0.848% |
2x | 0.606% |
3x | 0.471% |
3-4-5x | 0.374% |
Don’t Pass Bet
House edge: Low (1.36%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: before the ‘Come Out’ roll (at the start of each round)
Multi-roll
This is the opposite of the Pass Line bet, and actually has a lower house edge. However, you’ll be betting against the Shooter so don’t expect to be the most popular player at the table!
- If the Shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the Come Out roll, you lose your Don’t Pass bet and another round begins.
- If a 2 or 3 is rolled, you win your Don’t Pass bet and another round begins.
- If a 12 is rolled, it is called a ‘Push’ or a ‘Bar’ – you neither win or lose, and your bet is returned.
- If the Shooter gets a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, your Don’t Pass bet remains on the felt for the time being.
- The number rolled becomes the Point Number. If the Shooter rolls a 7 before hitting this number again, you win your Don’t Pass bet.
- If the Shooter rolls the Point Number before rolling a 7, you lose your Pass Line bet.
Laying The Odds (AKA Don’t Pass Lay Odds)
House edge: None (0.00%)
Pays: 4 or 10 – 1:2, 5 or 9 – 2:3, 6 or 8 – 5:6
Can be played: after the Point Number has been set, but only if you’ve made a Don’t Pass bet
Multi-roll
This is the opposite of ‘Taking The Odds’, but retains its main advantage: there is no house edge. Despite this, some people don’t like Laying The Odds as you have to bet more to win less. Basically, you are betting that a 7 will be rolled before the Point Number is.
For example: the Point Number is 10. There are three ways to roll a 10 (4-6, 5-5, 6-4), while there are six ways to roll a 7 (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 6-1) – this makes the Odds 4:6, which is the same as 1:2. In Craps online, Odds bets are unique in that the payout ratio is the same as the true odds of the outcome you are betting on. This means for every $2 you bet, you get $1 back if you win.
To make this bet, you have to stack your chips next to your Don’t Pass bet, on the dealer’s side – feel free to ask for help if you’re unsure. The table below compares the house edge of each Don’t Pass bet and shows how Laying The Odds can seriously turn the odds in your favor.
Table Odds Taken | Don’t Pass |
---|---|
0x | 1.36% |
1x | 0.682% |
2x | 0.455% |
3x | 0.341% |
3-4-5x | 0.273% |
Come Bet
House edge: Low (1.41%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: after the Point Number has been set
Multi-roll
The Come bet is very similar to the Pass Line bet, except it is made after the Shooter has established the Point Number. You can make as many Come bets as you like.
- If the Shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12, you lose your Come bet.
- If the Shooter rolls a 7 or 11, you win your Come bet.
- If the Shooter rolls anything else (including the Point Number), your Come bet will be moved to that number on the board. This becomes a kind of ‘secondary Point Number’.
- Once your Come bet has moved to a Point Number, it remains there until;
- The number to which your Come bet was moved is rolled – in which case you win your Come bet, or;
- A 7 is rolled, in which case you lose your Come bet.
Don’t Come Bet
House edge: Low (1.40%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: after the Point Number has been set
Multi-roll
The Don’t Come bet is very similar to the Don’t Pass bet, except it is made after the Shooter has established the Point Number. You can make as many Don’t Come bets as you like.
- If the Shooter rolls a 2 or 3, you win your Don’t Come bet.
- If the Shooter rolls a 12, this is a Push, and your bet is returned.
- If the Shooter rolls a 7 or 11, you lose your Don’t Come bet.
- If the Shooter rolls anything else (including the Point Number), your Don’t Come bet will be moved to the small section above that number on the board. This indicates that you’re betting the Shooter will roll a 7 before they roll that number (this is also known as a ‘Lay bet’).
- Once your Come bet has moved to a Point Number, it remains there until;
- A 7 is rolled – in which case you win your Don’t Come bet, or;
- The number to which your Come bet was moved is rolled, in which case you lose your Don’t Come bet.
Field Bets
House edge: OK (2.77%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: any time
Single-roll
Moving away from the simpler bets, next up we have Field bets. This bet pays out even money if the Shooter rolls a 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11. What’s more, most online Craps tables pay double if the Shooter rolls a 2 and triple for a 12!
With a 2.77% house edge, you’ve got a slightly larger disadvantage vs the casino than the Pass Line and Come bets. But Field bets are still a nice change of pace and a good way to start expanding your online Craps betting repertoire.
Big Bets
House edge: High (9.09%)
Pays: 1:1
Can be played: any time
Multi-roll
Big 6 and Big 8 are very simple bets that can be made at any time. Basically, you are betting that either a 6 or an 8 (depending on which one you put your chips on) will be rolled by the Shooter before a 7 is.
However, this bet has a very high house edge compared to other bets available to you – here at CasinoGuide, we advise avoiding it altogether when playing Craps online.
Proposition Bets
House edge: Very High (11.1 – 16.67%)
Pays: Variable (see table below)
Can be played: any time
Multi-roll and single-roll (see table)
Also known as ‘Props’, these can be generously described as high-risk / high-reward bets. While the payouts are tempting, anyone playing over an extended period of time would be best off leaving them alone. This is because the house edge is one of the highest you’ll find on the online Craps table.
Most of the Proposition bets are self-explanatory in terms of what they actually mean, except for the C and E bet. This is like the Any Craps bet, and pays 3:1 for a 2, 3, or 12. The difference is it also pays out at 7:1 if the Shooter rolls an 11.
Check the table below for the house edge of each Proposition bet. As you can see, they are all very high, which is why we don’t recommend making these bets – particularly if you are a beginner. Some of their payouts can be seen in the image above, although this is variable depending on the casino.
Proposition Bet | Pays | House Edge |
---|---|---|
Any 7 | 4:1 | 16.67% |
Horn: 2 Craps (2 on next roll) | 30:1 | 16.67% |
Horn: 3 Craps (3 on next roll) | 15:1 | 11.11% |
Horn: 11 Craps (11 on next roll) | 15:1 | 11.11% |
Horn: 12 Craps (12 on next roll) | 30:1 | 16.67% |
Horn Bet: 4-way (2, 3, 11, or 12 on next roll) | 27:4 (2 or 12) 3:1 (3 or 11) | 12.22% |
C: Any Craps (2, 3, 12 on next roll) | 7:1 | 11.11% |
E: Eleven (11 on next roll) | 15:1 | 11.11% |
C&E (2, 3, 11, or 12 on next roll) | 3:1 (2, 3, or 12) 7:1 (11) | 11.11% |
Hard 4 (2 and 2, before a 7 or an Easy 4 is rolled) | 7:1 | 11.11% |
Hard 6 (3 and 3, before a 7 or an Easy 6 is rolled) | 9:1 | 9.09% |
Hard 8 (4 and 4, before a 7 or an Easy 8 is rolled) | 9:1 | 9.09% |
Hard 10 (5 and 5, before a 7 or an Easy 10 is rolled) | 7:1 | 11.11% |
Place Bets
House edge: OK (1.52 – 6.67%)
Pays: Variable (see table below)
Can be played: any time
Multi-roll
These bets are like an on-demand Point Number. There are a number of different bets which can be made in this area of the online Craps table.
- Place a bet to win on a certain number and you are hoping it will come out before a 7 does.
- Don’t Place bets mean hoping a 7 is rolled before your chosen number.
- Buy and Lay bets require the same outcomes as Place and Don’t Place bets respectively. But the payouts of these bets are equal to the odds of rolling it – meaning the house edge is zero. However, there is a 5% commission (also known as a ‘Vig’ or ‘Juice’) on these bets which re-establishes the house edge.
- Some Craps online casinos take the ‘Vig’ only after a win, which decreases the house edge still further. In our table below, we display both house edges – the one which applies in these cases is shown second.
For convenience, we have highlighted the best bet for each pair of numbers, in terms of which offers the lowest house edge. This doesn’t include Buy or Lay bets where the Vig is only charged on winning bets, as these can be hard to find.
Number | Bet | Payout | House Edge |
---|---|---|---|
4 or 10 | Place | 9:5 | 6.67% |
Don’t Place | 5:11 | 3.03% | |
Buy | 2:1 | 4.76% / 1.64% | |
Lay | 1:2 | 2.44% / 1.67% | |
5 or 9 | Place | 7:5 | 4% |
Don’t Place | 5:8 | 2.5% | |
Buy | 3:2 | 4.76% / 1.96% | |
Lay | 2:3 | 3.23% / 2% | |
6 or 8 | Place | 7:6 | 1.52% |
Don’t Place | 4:5 | 1.82% | |
Buy | 6:5 | 4.76% / 2.22% | |
Lay | 5:6 | 4% / 2.27% |
Hop Bets
House edge: High (11.11 – 13.89%)
Pays: 30:1 (Hard) or 15:1 (Easy)
Can be played: any time
Single-roll
These bets aren’t typically labelled on the table, but they are still usually available. Essentially Hop bets enable you to bet on a specific outcome occurring on the next roll of the dice. Hop bets are single-roll, which means that if you don’t hit your chosen outcome on the first roll after making the bet, you lose.
There are two kinds of Hop bets:
- Hard Hop: betting on a Hard Way number (i.e. a Hard 4 requires both dice showing a 2)
- Easy Hop: betting on an Easy Way number (i.e. a 4 which is made up of a 3 and a 1)
The payout for all Hard Hop bets is 30:1, which carries a house edge of 13.89%. The payout for Easy Hop bets is 15:1, and the house edge is 11.11%. The Easy Hop payout is lower because there are two ways each number can be achieved, as opposed to only one way in the case of Hard Way bets.
Due to the high house edges, we wouldn’t recommend either bet here at CasinoGuide.
Small, Tall and All Bets
House edge: High (7.76 – 7.99%)
Pays: 34:1 (Small / Tall) or 174:1 (All)
Can be played: at the beginning of the Round, before the Come Out roll
Multi-roll
A different kind of online Craps bet, Small, Tall and All bets have the potential to grant you very big wins, if you’re lucky enough. Paying up to 174x your bet, even a small wager could reap big rewards – winning an All bet with a $5 stake would see you rake in $870! Here’s how they work:
- Small – you are betting that the Shooter will roll a 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 before they roll a 7. If you are successful, you will win 34x your bet. Sounds tempting, but remember there’s a sizeable house edge of 7.76.
- Tall – you are betting that the Shooter will roll an 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 before rolling a 7. Again, winning this bet will net you 34x your wager. The house edge is the same as the Small bet.
- All – the Big Daddy of online Craps bets. You are betting that the Shooter will roll a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 before rolling a 7. The odds on this are incredibly high, which is why the payout is a whopping 174x your bet. The house advantage of the All bet is 7.99%.
Here at CasinoGuide, we recommend using this bet very cautiously – the high house edge makes it a poor bet if used regularly. But there’s no harm in throwing the odd few dollars at it on occasions when you’re feeling particularly lucky.
Fire Bet
House edge: Very high (21.27%)
Pays: 25:1 (4 unique numbers), 100:1 (5 unique numbers), or 1000:1 (6 unique numbers)
Can be played: at the beginning of the Round, before the Come Out roll
Multi-roll
This is a bet you’ll find less often in recent times, but some Craps online casinos still offer it. The Fire bet is so named as it is intended to be used on tables which are ‘hot’ – i.e. one which isn’t seeing a lot of 7 rolls.
In order for you to win this bet, the Shooter needs to roll at least 4 unique Point Numbers (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10), before rolling a 7. If he manages 4, then you win 25x your bet. 5 numbers nets you a win of 100x your bet, and if they manage 6, you’ll win a massive 1000x your bet!
As with Small, Tall and All bets, we recommend you reserve the Fire bet for rare occasions where you feel lucky. The house edge is very high on this bet, so you are getting a lot of risk for the chance of a big reward. Here’s a video of some very happy winners of a 6 Point Fire Bet in Las Vegas:
